According to the older generation of my friends, in the Santa Fe area around 1800, coyote fencing was created by farmers trying to keep the coyotes from their chicken coops. They came up with the idea of putting small diameter latillas together, buried them in the ground and offset at the top, then the coyote would not be able to get into the chicken coop. And it worked!
